Did you know the number of Governor Discipline Committees (GDCs) taking place has nearly doubled over the last year and the number of those going to Independent Review Panel (IRP) has more than doubled?

The decision to exclude is among the toughest that we make as school leaders. We know only too well the impact and enormity of our decision for the child or young person.  We also know that our decision will come under scrutiny at GDC and possibly at the IRP stage, and therefore decision making, and evidence must be robust and stand up to judicial review principles which will be used at the IRP stage.

56% of cases referred to an IRP have been quashed in Herts this academic year, mainly due to avoidable procedural impropriety. This compares to 26% of cases nationally in 2022.

Due to this increase, and following on from a successful session last week, we are pleased to be able to offer a full day course - Exclusions Training – Law and Process; getting it right  - to further support headteachers through the exclusion process.

The session will take place on Monday 24th June from 9.30am – 4.30pm in person at Hertfordshire Development Centre, Robertson House, Six Hills Way, Stevenage and will be delivered by Polly Kerr, Legal Director, Tees Law.

Bookings are via GovernorHub. Schools not using GovernorHub or with any questions can email us at gov.courses@hfleducation.org
