We’re pleased to continued our partnership with Scholastic on new UK editions of the 3-Minute Reading Assessments by reading experts Professor Tim Rasinski and Nancy Padak.
Designed for pupils aged 6 to 13, the teacher-friendly resources make it easier to monitor reading progress, identify gaps and plan appropriate next steps. Each assessment takes just three minutes and uses short, carefully levelled fiction and non-fiction passages to provide a useful snapshot of a pupil’s reading.
The assessments support teachers in evaluating:
- word recognition and accuracy
- reading rate and fluency
- expressive reading
- comprehension
Clear guidance explains what to listen for as pupils read aloud, while straightforward recording formats help teachers track progress over time. The resources can support formative assessment, whole-class teaching and targeted interventions, helping teachers identify pupils who may need additional support or greater challenge.
We have contributed our reading-fluency expertise to update the resources for UK schools. This builds on the work of our Reading Fluency Project, developed alongside Professor Tim Rasinski, which uses evidence-informed strategies to strengthen accuracy, automaticity, prosody and comprehension.
Our collaboration with Scholastic also reflects an established relationship: the original editions of the assessments were already published by Scholastic, and the new resources have now been adapted for UK audiences with our input.
The new series includes editions for ages 6–8, 8–11 and 11–13 and supports the National Year of Reading 2026.
