Black History Month provides an important opportunity for schools to help pupils understand the people, stories and communities that have shaped the world around them.
To support this work, we have created a free Black History Month 2026 resource aligned with this year's theme, Honouring Our Communities.
Designed for primary and secondary schools, the resource explores Black history through a Hertfordshire lens. It helps pupils connect national and global narratives with people, places and stories from their own county.
Drawing on research from local archives, museums and community organisations, the resource introduces schools to individuals including Fortunatus, John Accomy, Francis Barber and George Edward Doney. It also explores more recent stories connected to the Windrush generation and contemporary Black communities in Hertfordshire.
Rather than providing a single lesson or assembly, the resource offers curriculum-linked starting points that schools can adapt for different ages and contexts. It encourages pupils to investigate local history, explore original sources, consider whose stories are remembered and make connections between local, national and global histories.
The resource also highlights inspiring Hertfordshire figures from public service, sport, education and community leadership, alongside local museums, archives and organisations that can support further learning.
