Take a look at the latest edition of Headteacher Update and you’ll find “Is anyone reading this? Getting primary writing right”, a thought-provoking article from Kathy Roe of HFL Education.

In the article, Kathy explores the crucial role that audience and purpose play in helping children develop as writers. She argues that when writing is viewed as genuine communication rather than simply an exercise in technical accuracy, pupils become more engaged, motivated and successful in their writing.

The article highlights the importance of creating meaningful opportunities for pupils to write for real audiences and authentic purposes. Kathy shares practical ideas to enhance classroom practice and support primary schools in improving writing outcomes while nurturing pupils’ enthusiasm for writing.

As Kathy notes, “If we forget that writing is communication and restrict composition, there is a real danger that we lose our writers early on.”
