A love of books is something we all aspire to develop in the children we teach. Research has found strong evidence that reading for pleasure can increase empathy, improve relationships with others, reduce the symptoms of depression and the risk of dementia, and improve wellbeing throughout life*. If reading is a pleasure for them, children won’t see it as ‘work’, but as a way of accessing a wealth of information and opening door to other worlds.
HFL Education heartily supports reading for pleasure and understands how difficult it is for a school to maintain a well-stocked library of interesting and relevant books, so we are offering a prize of a £250 book voucher to support you with growing your library. We’d also like to share our list of recommended books with you.
*Research carried out for The Reading Agency
The HFL Education booklist was produced to support schools with the race equity agenda.
The titles have been categorised by key stage and the list has been curated from a wide range of sources. It is by no means exhaustive, but it gives suggestions of books which provide alternative perspectives, voices from people of colour and experiences from different cultures. The book list also includes suggestions for staff, which you could use to augment a staff reading library and to support your work on increasing racial literacy amongst staff, governors and trustees.
The ArborFest prize draw is now closed and we have a winner!
Congratulations to Lindsey Evans of Innovate MAT on winning the £250 book token.
