By Tracy House, Head of Data Management Services

Our Data Management Services Team is currently supporting three Welsh local authorities (LAs) through the complex transition to a new Management Information System (MIS). Amid a period of stretched resources, our consultants are providing vital additional capacity to help ensure a smooth and effective migration process for schools across Wales.

With a proven track record of successfully migrating more than 300 schools in rapid succession, we bring deep expertise in managing the risks and challenges associated with large-scale MIS transitions. As an independent support provider, we offer impartial, strategic advice grounded in a thorough understanding of the LA perspective.

Throughout the procurement and implementation phases, we have worked closely with LA teams, offering support, guidance and insight. This partnership approach has helped local teams navigate the complexities of a high-stakes change programme, anticipating potential issues and developing strategies to mitigate them.

Recognising the significant impact such transitions can have on both LA staff and school-based colleagues, our involvement has allowed local teams to focus on gaining accreditation in their new MIS platforms and delivering a comprehensive migration service to schools. This includes ensuring staff are well trained and supported during the critical early weeks post-migration.

While data quality, system integration and technical accuracy are essential, the greatest challenge in MIS migration lies in user adoption. Resistance to change – driven by uncertainty, attachment to familiar systems or concerns about adapting to new – processes can hinder even the most technically sound transitions.

Drawing on our experience, we have developed tailored strategies and communication approaches to support schools, settings and trusts through the human side of change. By addressing user concerns and fostering confidence, we help maximise the success of MIS migrations.
