Over the past few years, Early Years education has seen significant changes aimed at improving outcomes for young children and supporting educators. The Department for Education (DfE) has introduced updates to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework to streamline requirements and make them more accessible for practitioners. These changes have focused on simplifying guidance for childminders and group-based providers, ensuring clarity in expectations, and enhancing flexibility in delivering Early Years education.

Ofsted has also refined its inspection framework to better reflect the evolving landscape of Early Years provision. Recent updates have emphasised the importance of an ambitious curriculum for all children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Looking ahead, further modifications to the EYFS framework and changes to Ofsted’s inspection handbook, will continue to offer opportunities to schools and settings to reflect on change and embed it in their practice, ensuring that Early Years settings provide inclusive high-quality education and care while supporting professional development for educators.

These developments reflect a commitment to strengthening Early Years education, ensuring that children receive the best possible start in life while supporting practitioners in delivering high-quality learning experiences.

With the planned changes taking place, it is a pertinent time to guide reflection and planning with your team, ensuring that change is effectively integrated for lasting impact.

Considerations when embedding change in your setting

  • How do I ensure that changes align with the needs and interests of children, families, and staff?
  • What strategies have been most effective in fostering a culture of continuous improvement?
  • How do I support my team in embracing change and feeling confident in new approaches?
  • What barriers might arise when implementing change, and how can they be addressed proactively?
  • How do I evaluate the impact of change on children’s learning and development?
  • What role does collaboration play in successfully embedding new practices?
  • How do I balance maintaining best practices with introducing innovative approaches?
  • What professional development opportunities can support staff in adapting to change?
  • How can I ensure that changes remain sustainable and meaningful over time?
  • How do I gather feedback from colleagues, children, and families to refine and improve new initiatives?
